References
References are generally a tool used by recruiters or potential employers to confirm dates of employments, job title and sometimes to ascertain if there were any issues whilst the candidate was employed.
In fairness to the employee its important that you provide the reference as quickly as possible as this may jeopardise any potential job offer as the new employer may think there is an ulterior motive for the delay.
Some employers do have a standard response of only supplying dates of employments which can in itself be enough - remember to be accurate when providing reference information
