BBQ at Home - Save Our Moorlands.
Today one of our local supermarket stores have decided they will no longer sell disposable BBQs to protect our moorland.
Last year hundreds of acres of land were destroyed by fire on the moorlands in Lancashire which had devastating effects on our wildlife all of which was started with a disposable BBQ.
But did you know just how important our moorland is to us and our WATER INDUSTRY as well as our wildlife?
Millions of pounds are being spent to make our moorlands more resilient to climate change, reduce carbon loss, slow the flow of clean water, and improve our Water Quality.
Moorland is used to gather water for Drinking Water Supplies and help in the reducing the risk of flooding.
So, as well as our Leakage Technicians, Noise Loggers and Data Analysts working daily to improve our Water Supply, our very own moorlands are there to do just the same!!
Should disposable BBQs be banned altogether?
As well as all the above, the cost and toll it takes on our emergency services and our Water Industry is huge.
To extinguish last year’s moorland fire, a gallon of water per every 3 square feet of fire was needed, and in total it covered an areaof about 400 metres by 100 metres.
The fire service attended the scene for days, with helicopters drafted in also to dump water from above, at a reported cost of £2000 a day.
Until all shops decide to stop selling disposable BBQs, here are a few steps you can take in protecting our moorland:
  • Phone 999 if you see a suspected wildfire, do not assume somebody else has reported it.
  • Only BBQ at home, take a picnic on to the moors not a BBQ.
  • Do not smoke on the moors.
  • Take all your litter home.
Let us do our bit to protect our moorland as it is there to help us.
